Move With Me for D23

Elementary PTO and Summer Camp Scholarship FUNdraiser

Calling all Eisenhower Eagles, Betsy Ross Bulldogs and Anne Sullivan Shepherds…get your walking shoes on and move with me for District 23!  This is our chance to bring the elementary school district community together in support of Summer Camp Scholarships for D23 students in need AND in support of the D23 Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO).

When and Where is the Event?
The move-a-thon will take place during school hours on *Tuesday, May 16th, 2017! Participation is FREE -- students and teachers will walk/move in two shifts: (1) 8:45am-10:45am: 4th grade students will start at Sullivan, pick up 2nd grade students at Ross, and walk to IKE where they will pick up students in AM Early Childhood and AM / Full Day Kindergarten and take a lap around IKE; (2) 12pm-2pm: 5th graders will pick up 3rd graders and will walk to IKE where they will pick up 1st graders, and PM Early Childhood / Kindergarteners. Ross/Sullivan students and teachers/staff will walk down West Ridge Ave, turn right on Elm Street, and right on Camp McDonald Road to Eisenhower School (and the reverse on the way back!).

Why a move-a-thon?

Our goals this year are to:

(1) bring our three elementary school communities together in a fun, active way!

(2) to raise money for Summer Camp Scholarships for D23 students in need.  The Summer Camp Scholarship Fund, in memory of Jake Szymanski, assists District 23 students who need financial support to attend summer camp.  Over the past several years, the D23 community has raised funds to send 5-10 students to camp each summer.  Our goal is to raise more than $2,000 to send even MORE kids to camp this year!

(3) to raise money for the Elementary PTO which funds things like school assemblies, after-school enrichment (e.g. STEAM club), and playground equipment.  Our goal is to raise $5,000 for the EPTO!

100% of the proceeds will go back to the D23 elementary community - and are tax deductible!  Just think, if each student secured just $10 in donations, this event would raise over $10,000!

How will it work?

The process is simple. Students are encouraged - but not required - to ask people to ‘sponsor’ them. Sponsorship is a single donation, not based on laps or minutes walked. ‘Sponsors’ might be friends, family, neighbors, and parents’ co-workers who agree to donate money for a student’s participation in the event [NOTE: please do not go door-to-door without adult supervision].  Cash or checks are collected and made payable to “District 23 Elementary PTO.” Donations can also be made on our EPTO website via Paypal. Students turn in their money and sponsor sheets to their classroom teachers by Thursday, May 11th to be eligible for prizes.

Wait, there’s prizes?

Yes! All students that turn in a minimum of $10 (via the sponsor sheets) will be entered into a drawing for a $25 Amazon gift card (students will receive 1 entry for every $10 raised – so for example, $100 in donations = 10 entries). One gift card will be awarded per grade level at each of the walks.

In addition to sponsored donations, Ross and Sullivan will be selling “links” May 1st-5th during lunch for $1.00 / each. IKE will sell “links” too (a letter / envelope will go home to families inviting them to send a couple dollars with their kiddos to purchase links, if they choose to do so). “Links” will also be available for purchase at the May 9th elementary orchestra and band concert. These donations will not count towards the Amazon gift card raffle; however, the grade level with the longest chain of links will get an extra recess!!!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q:  What if the weather is lousy on the day of the event?
A:  A ‘rain date’ has been scheduled for Friday, May 19th.

Q:  Can I send my child with a water bottle?  What should s/he wear?
A:  Yes, students may bring their own re-usable water bottles (labeled with their names).  We will also have additional water available at Eisenhower.  Students should wear comfortable shoes and their school t-shirts / spirit wear, if they have it.  And of course, dress appropriately for the weather!

Q:  What percentage of the funds raised will go towards the D23 community (summer camp scholarships and PTO)?
A:  100%!  This event is being organized by the Sullivan Ambassador Teachers (and students) and the EPTO.  Because we were able to organize this event without the help of an outside, professional fundraiser, ALL proceeds will go towards summer camp scholarships and the EPTO.

Q:  Who will be chaperoning the students during the event?
A:  The teachers, staff, and principals from each school – EVERYONE participates!  We anticipate at least two adults per class.  We’ve also invited the Prospect Heights Police Department to be present on the route that day.

Q: My sponsors want to know if their donations are tax deductible.... are they?
A: Yes! 100% of your donations are tax deductible! The EPTO is a 501(c)3 organization and our IRS Tax ID # is 46-2864343. To print receipts to give to your donors, click HERE.

Q:  How can I help the day of the event?
A:  So glad you asked!  We could use some helpers to distribute water, take pictures, etc.  A sign-up genius will go out in FriPack (our PTO weekly email) in late April.

Q:  When will the winners of the Amazon gift cards be announced?
A:  Winners for each grade level (and one each for AM / PM early childhood and AM / PM kindergarten) will be announced at the ‘walk’ at Eisenhower.  Remember, it’s a raffle!  And the more you donate, the higher the
odds of winning

Q:  If my child purchases ‘links,’ will that count towards his/her total donations for the Amazon gift card raffle drawing?
A:  No, only the sponsor sheet donations will count towards their totals for the amazon gift card raffle drawing.  The incentive for purchasing ‘links’ is to see which grade level can make the longest chain and earn an extra recess.

Q:  I can’t find my child’s Sponsor Sheet (or we need another one!) – where can I get one?
A:  Hard copies of the Sponsor Sheets went home in backpack mail on April 7th.  But you can access an electronic copy HERE.

Q:  Who can I direct more specific questions to?
A:  Email
